Frequently Asked Questions.

Everything you need to know about receiving your own pair of tefillin — and helping the next person get theirs.

What are tefillin?

Tefillin are one of the most special mitzvahs in Judaism. They consist of two small black leather boxes containing handwritten passages from the Torah. One is placed on the arm, close to the heart, and the other on the head.

Putting on tefillin is a powerful way to connect with Hashem (G-d), our Jewish identity, and thousands of years of Jewish tradition.

Who is eligible to receive a pair of tefillin?

Our Tefillin Bank is open to any halachically Jewish male, age 13 or older, who commits to putting on tefillin every weekday and does not have his own pair.

You don’t need to be religious, attend synagogue, or have any previous experience with tefillin. All we ask is a sincere commitment to make this beautiful mitzvah part of your daily life.

How much does it cost to receive a pair of tefillin?

A high-quality pair of tefillin typically costs $1500+. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, GetTefillin covers the majority of that cost.

We ask each recipient for a one-time $270 commitment fee, which goes directly toward sponsoring a pair of tefillin for the next person.

This way, you’re not only beginning your own journey of putting on tefillin daily, but also helping another Jew begin his.

You contribute $270, our donors cover the rest, and together we keep the mitzvah going.

Do I have to be religious to qualify?

Absolutely not!

Whether you’re completely new to Judaism, just beginning to explore your Jewish identity, or already practicing some mitzvahs, you’re welcome to apply.

Our mission is to help every Jewish man build a lasting connection with Hashem through the mitzvah of tefillin.

Where do the tefillin come from?

Our tefillin are sourced primarily from Israel and are high-quality Gasos tefillin, made using traditional Jewish craftsmanship.

Gasos tefillin are crafted from thick leather and are known for their durability and quality. We believe every Jew deserves a beautiful, kosher pair of tefillin that can last for many years.

What does committing to put on tefillin daily mean?

It means making a genuine commitment to put on your tefillin every weekday.

Tefillin are worn during the daytime, generally during morning prayers, but you don’t need to pray the entire morning service to fulfill the mitzvah.

Putting on tefillin can take just a few minutes, yet it creates a meaningful daily connection to your Jewish identity.

Do I need to know Hebrew or how to pray?

Not at all!

You don’t need to read Hebrew, know the prayers, or have any previous experience.

We want to help you get started, even if you’ve never put on tefillin before.

How often do I wear tefillin?

Tefillin are worn every weekday, during daylight hours, but not on Shabbat or major Jewish holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover, and Shavuot.

The goal is to make putting on tefillin part of your regular daily routine.

Why is putting on tefillin so important?

Tefillin are a direct mitzvah from the Torah and have been worn by Jewish men for thousands of years.

They remind us to dedicate our thoughts, feelings, and actions to Hashem.

The Torah places tremendous emphasis on the mitzvah of tefillin, encouraging Jewish men everywhere to put them on, even if they have never done so before.

It’s a small daily action with an extraordinary spiritual impact.

Can I support the Tefillin Bank?

Absolutely!

Every donation helps another Jewish man receive his own pair of tefillin and begin a lifelong mitzvah.

Your generosity doesn’t just provide a pair of tefillin. It creates an opportunity for someone to connect with their Jewish identity every single day, potentially for the rest of their life.

Help us put tefillin on the arms of Jewish men around the world.
